Growing Up | via printmyemotions.com

I had a moment last night. I was sitting in the piano room, listening to Joe practice his percussion and I looked over at him and just, well … sigh.

Who is this young man who is nearly as tall as me? Who looks so grown up? Who is working so intently on learning this snare drum part?

He’s the same little boy who loved the Transformers soooo much at age 5.

img_3771He’s the same little boy who wore his Batman mask everywhere, much to the delight of store clerks and all the folks eating lunch in Culver’s.

He’s the same little boy who picked yellow as his favorite color and rarely left home without his yellow blanket as a toddler.

He’s the same little boy who built magnificently tall structures with his Legos that were in perfect symmetry on each side.

He’s the same little boy who played with his Thomas the Tank Engine trains for hours and was obsessed with Gordon because he was the largest, fastest train.

He’s the same little boy who read every Captain Underpants book at least three times and erupted into fits of giggles each time at all the silly moments.

He’s the same little boy who would get frustrated when he couldn’t do something absolutely perfect the very first time.

He’s the same little boy who cried every time he heard a particular Maroon 5 song about lost love.

He’s the same little boy who would show off his dance moves when I played a Lady Gaga song.

He’s the same little boy who loved catching toads and could impress anyone with his knowledge of frogs.

And now he’s just a couple of months shy of being a seventh grader – in addition to being just an inch or so shy of his mother’s height.

He listens to his own music and rarely erupts into a spontaneous dance party – at least not in front of me – but he still loves being goofy.

He’s conscientious about his school work and his grades show it.

His passion is video gaming and he is still a voracious reader.

He remains a steadfast fan of all frog species and yellow is still his favorite color.

He makes me laugh with his sense of humor and he totally gets sarcasm.

He’s the same sensitive boy with the big heart.

And his hugs remain the best part of any day.

He’s growing up, and of course I think time moves too quickly. But he’s a joy to watch.

And that’s exactly what I did last night.

Sigh.

  1. Mine will start 7th grade soon as well. I love it when little hints of the the little boy pop out, but it’s fun to see him turning into a man, wielding a hammer and building a shed with his dad. And yes, the hugs are the best.

    • This is so true, Rhonda – it’s so cool to see the young man coming out but also somewhat reassuring the little boy is still there, too. 🙂 Thanks for reading!
