It’s late Sunday afternoon as I write this latest post. Teacher Man is napping, Joe is video gaming (Terraria, I believe), and Earl the Pug is trying to find a comfortable spot on the floor by my feet so that he catches some of the warm breeze coming through the window.

As I mentioned late last week, the weather has indeed turned springy in Minnesota with highs in the mid-70s putting smiles on faces everywhere and giving us a chance to actually see and talk to our neighbors again. Everyone has been out and about!

We spent a good portion of the weekend catching up on yard and garden work, which always gets me energized this time of year. The garden beds have now all been officially cleaned up and both the front porch and our back deck have been scrubbed, with furniture coming out of hibernation. Joe washed out all my garden pots yesterday while I cut down the last of my perennial grasses, and later I found my happy place – shopping for pansies, herbs, and a few other garden items that caught my eye at The Rustic Garden in Buffalo.

My little community has several places to buy plants, including the usual suspects (Walmart and Menard’s if you’re looking for a good deal) but I love to support this local business. They have an excellent selection of perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, and the most amazing garden decor items. I am always looking for plants that go beyond the basic selection of some nurseries so fingers-crossed that The Rustic Garden will continue to be successful here locally.

This weekend, I picked up some Cool Wave® pansies, onion sets (Walla Wall and Spanish White), a trifecta of herb plants (thyme, cilantro, and basil), and a couple of finds that were, I readily admit, impulse purchases but totally worth it. Check out my photos below to see what I found!

If you are in the Buffalo area, I highly recommend a stop at The Rustic Garden – great selection, personable and knowledgeable staff, and simply a fun place to while away some time if you love gardening.

I can’t wait to come back and do some serious plant shopping, but it’s a little too early yet in Minnesota to go too crazy! I usually shoot for May 15 (right around Mother’s Day) to plant my annual pots.

The Rustic Garden has clearly stepped up its garden decor game even further this year – table upon table of such fun, quirky stuff!

I’m kicking myself that I didn’t just outright purchase this owl for my niece, Morgan, who is absolutely enamored with owls. I saw it on Saturday and went back Sunday afternoon to track it down, but it was already gone! (Sorry, Miss Morgan!)

More metal art – the puffer fish on the table are intriguing to me. 🙂

My first impulse purchase – this metal basket! I love the large size of it, as it will be perfect to showcase a big pot of annuals all summer.

For now, I will enjoy these lovely pansies, which bring some much-needed color and greenery to our front porch.

My herbs – basil, thyme, and cilantro – found a spot on our back deck, where they will get the east sun and are somewhat protected from the wind (mostly).

My second impulse buy … the “Farm” metal sign that we hunt on our front porch. I love this!

Here’s a better look at it.

Teacher Man and I enjoyed happy hour Saturday night, sitting on our front porch swing and loving the warm spring weather.

A gin and tonic for him and a cranberry-pomegranate cosmopolitan for me!

Our porch spring got spiffed up, too, thanks to a deep scrubbing by Joe and a new cushion I found at Walmart here in town.

The sign is a little faded, but it always makes me smile. “Guard Dog” and “Pug” are, I think, mutually exclusive. 🙂

I look forward to sharing more gardening posts with you all spring, summer, and fall. In the meantime, here’s hoping your week gets off to a great start!
